The letter S
In the 1970s, Alice Heng went looking for the best beauty science in the world. She found it in two places: Paris, then the centre of beauty technology, and Japan, with its deep understanding of skin. She brought both home to Singapore — where, at the time, professional beauty care was imported, costly, and out of reach for most women.
She meant to name her clinic after the country that had trained her: France Beauty Clinic. The registry refused — no company may bear a country's name. So at the counter, without missing a beat, Alice added a single letter.
France became Frances — and the accident said something true. Frances was never about a place. It was about a way of working.
That way was plain: tell the truth, never oversell, let the results speak. Alice listened, she explained, and she sent women home with visible change rather than a longer bill. Many who first trusted her in the seventies still come today — now with their daughters, and their daughters' daughters.
Nearly fifty years on, that principle has grown into something larger. Frances is now a wellness company of four divisions — beauty, medical aesthetics, skin health and hair — with treatments, devices and skincare developed in-house. One idea connects them, and we call it Intelligent Beauty Care: science used to support the way skin ages, not to fight it.
The name still fits. Frances was never a destination but a direction. Where Alice built trust by hand, the next chapter builds it through science — regenerative, evidence-led, and quietly ambitious about what beauty can mean in the years ahead.
